Egg Yolk Coffee

egg yolk coffee is a delicious, pro-metabolic drink for busy moms who don’t have time or desire to eat a full meal first thing in the morning

I may be compensated for products linked in this post at no extra cost to you. I only share and recommend products I actually use.

It’s crucial for women in their childbearing years to eat plenty of nutrient-dense calories throughout the day. Restrictive diets, fasting, and skipping meals can wreak havoc on the metabolism and the body as a whole. Fasting causes both fat and muscle to break down (not in a good way) while releasing stress hormones and suppressing the immune system and metabolism. This is definitely not healthy.

Also, the female body is constantly cycling through stages of fertility preparing to make a baby. Whether we are trying to conceive or not, the body is! So we need a steady stream of calories and nutrients to make enough energy to.

I know you may be thinking: I didn’t come here to learn about fertility. BUT, if you’re interested in egg yolk coffee, you’re interested in having a healthy metabolism. And ovulation/fertility is a key marker of overall health. So I always mention it when talking about fasting and metabolism.

Pro-metabolic breakfast hack

So now that we’ve established that fasting and low-calorie diets aren’t a good idea for women, let us address a common problem for busy moms: not eating breakfast. Starting the day can be hectic. And it’s so easy to skip breakfast or let several hours go by after waking before consuming anything aside from black coffee. That’s definitely not ideal for supporting a healthy metabolism.

Ideally, we should be having some kind of nutritious caloric intake within a half-hour to an hour of waking in order to break the natural sleeping fast. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready for a meal at 5am when I wake up. So, what better way to get some good nutrition than to mix it right in with your morning coffee?

Which diets is this drink compatible with?

I do not recommend or subscribe to any specific diet for the average, generally healthy woman. Instead, I focus on intuitively eating whole foods in the right amounts, sourced locally when possible as a lifestyle.  Restrictive diets are so often counterproductive.

God created food not only to nourish us but also for us to enjoy! So I think food should taste good and be satiating. And while I think it’s fun to break down specific health benefits of different whole foods, it can be overwhelming. So as long as I’m eating well, I don’t worry too much about the specifics.

Having said all of that, egg yolk coffee does fit nicely into the pro-metabolic lifestyle category. Let’s talk a look at some of the properties and benefits of the ingredients in this recipe.

Does the egg scramble in hot coffee?

Nope! The egg yolk, cream, and sugar form a “custard” so the egg is heated and semi-cooked, but it maintains it’s custardy texture once the hot coffee is poured over.

Is it safe to consume raw egg yolks?

As mentioned above, the yolk is somewhat “cooked” when the hot coffee is added. Is it safe to consume raw egg yolks? Depends on who you ask! Many people consume foods with raw eggs regularly without thinking twice. Raw eggs can be found in homemade mayonnaise, sauces and dressings, coffee, etc.

Does egg yolk coffee taste like eggs?

No! If you’ve ever had homemade custard, egg yolk coffee tastes like that. And homemade custard is rich, velvety, and delicious. Check out my homemade custard recipe here.

Can you make non-caffeinated egg yolk drinks?

Yes! Dandelion root is a delicious alternative to coffee. Dandelion root tea is my favorite substitute for coffee in this recipe. It’s incredibly nourishing and more easily tolerated during pregnancy and postpartum when many women experience caffeine sensitivity.

Benefits of Egg Yolk Coffee

  1. Egg yolks (especially pastured/true free range) are one of the very best sources of fat and amino acids. They’re also rich in choline, folate, & retinol – all of which are essential for optimal brain + nervous system development and function.
  2. Coffee can be a highly beneficial gentle metabolic stimulant for healthy women when paired with nutrient-rich foods like raw cream, egg yolk, collagen, or maple syrup. Pairing coffee with egg yolk + cream + a natural sugar source has so many benefits. It stabilizes blood sugar, increases metabolism, naturally, increases progesterone, and can majorly boost mood.
  3. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and does so much more than give us healthy skin. It also supports a healthy metabolism + detoxification, is great for gut health, is anti-inflammatory, helps build muscle, and provides glycine which promotes brain function.
  4. Raw dairy is a nutritional powerhouse – it’s practically a meal in and of itself.  It contains all essential amino acids, vitamins A, K2, D, and B vitamins. I have an entire blog post on raw dairy here.
  5. Maple syrup is a mineral-rich, natural source of sugar.  It’s easily used by the body because the sugar in maple syrup is primarily in sucrose form – which is very quickly digested and made into energy.
