Having something warm to drink first thing in the morning is a must for me – the perfect way to wake up, get some fuel, and ease into my day. I typically drink some kind of jazzed up coffee, but during pregnancy and the first few weeks postpartum my body simply doesn’t tolerate it. So, one of my favorite warm, nutritious drinks to have in lieu of my morning coffee is bone broth hot chocolate. I’ve been making and canning bone broth for over 5 years now so I always have plenty on hand. It’s a kitchen staple in every homestead and loaded with health benefits. There’s a reason they say to eat soup when you’re sick – and no, great great grandma wasn’t serving up Campbell’s – but bone broth! And that’s the unexpected ingredient in today’s recipe.
Women in the childbearing years need to be fueling the body properly throughout the day
The body needs a good balance of carbs, fat, and protein to run properly. {Yes, we needs carbs. Please – if you are a woman – think twice before going near any lifestyle that doesn’t allow you to consume carbs regularly.} For women in the childbearing years especially, we need to be consuming healthy, balanced whole foods throughout the day in a steady flow. Fasting is not a good idea for women at all, we fast when we sleep – that’s it. All research showing benefits of intermittent fasting – was done on men.
Our feminine bodies were not built for dietary extremes.
We need to be ovulating every cycle – its a key marker of overall health. We need to be nourished consistently in order to ovulate. Yes, this is true for you even if you’re not trying to conceive. Because as long as you’re having cycles, your body is trying to conceive whether you want it to or not #biology.
Once we wake, we must to give the body what it needs to make energy and function well. BUT, I know as a mom of 4 who wakes at 5am to see my husband off for the day with his meals and get a start on my daily housework – I’m just not ready to eat a hearty breakfast that early in the morning. So, loaded, warm morning drinks are where its at for me. So you see, there’s a reason us women-folk like our frilly drinks – it’s biology. We were built to crave that which makes us operate properly.
Any meal or drink that’s loaded with whole foods is going to nourish pretty much every part of the body. So we really don’t need to get technical about specific benefits when we eat whole foods. We can just rest in knowing all is well. However, I think it’s fun and an amazing testimony to the wonder of God’s provision to break down benefits in natural food sources!
Benefits of Bone Broth Hot Chocolate
- Promotes Gut Health – bone broth has long been known as a GI tonic, and is a great way to get things moving in the morning and stay regular
- Healthy Skin, Nails, & Hair – Bone broth contains natural collagen which is actually best absorbed through the GI tract when we consume it – not when applied topically
- Support Bones & Joints – bone broth is super rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that promote a healthy inflammatory response and provide our body with bioavailable sources of nourishment.
- Natural Antidepressant + Energy Boost – pure, organic cocoa powder triggers the release of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins in the brain to provide a positive mood boost. It also contains anandamide – a natural chemical antidepressant. Maple syrup is a great natural source of sugar that the body can convert into the glucose it needs to make energy.
- Support Metabolism – polyphenols and flavanols in cocoa help the body metabolize fat properly and act as prebiotic in the gut, promoting a healthy intestinal microbiome.
How to Make Bone Broth Hot Chocolate
- Heat 1/2 cup bone broth and 1/2 cup milk on the stove to a simmer
- Add 1/4 cup heavy cream, 1 T each of cocoa powder & maple syrup, and a dash of sea salt to a coffee mug
- Whip with an immersion blender to a whipped cream consistency
- Pour the hot bone broth + milk mixture over the cocoa cream & enjoy!
Tips:
Firstly, add a scoop of collagen in to your mug on step #2 and whip it in with the cream for extra benefits! Collagen powders are NOT all created equally. I use Perfect Supplements grass fed beef collagen and highly recommend it. Also, any kind of bone broth will do – chicken, beef, etc. I prefer beef bone broth. If you want an extra caffeine boost – pour some hot coffee over top as well. Lastly, using raw dairy will be the healthiest option if you have access to it.
