Sourdough used to just be called…yeast!

It’s true! My husband’s grandma said that her mother always kept a large amount of “yeast” and that people would stop in from time to time to ask for some. What we call sourdough starter today is simply wild yeast. Women have been keeping yeast and baking with it long before digital kitchen scales and super precise, scientific recipes made it seem intimidating. Let’s reclaim the term “yeast” and simplify sourdough for the home baker, shall we?
